APARTHEID PROTESTS increased in America, and civil war seemed a frightening
possibility in South Africa as violence became a daily occurrence there.

SOUTH AFRICA'S Bishop Tutu (above) received the Nobel
Prize for Peace this year, calling attention to his country's
racist policies.

A THEOLOGICAL SPLIT of the Jewish people in America
became an issue of discussion this year as Orthodox vs. non-
Orthodox differences sharpened.

KING HUSSEIN grabbed headlines with word of his peace initiative this year but
his promise that the PLO's Yassir Arafat would be a partner never materialized.
