HISTORIC FREE TRADE AGREEMENT between Israel
and the U.S. was completed this spring. Above, President
Reagan, Secretary of Defense Weinberger, Secretary of State
Shultz and Israeli Foreign Minister Shamir.

WITHDRAWAL FROM LEBANON was a major priority of the Peres-Shamir
government and was finally completed, after a three-year occupation and great loss
of life.

SHAKY COALITION between Shimon Peres of Labor and
Yitzhak Shamir of Likud was finally achieved after inconclusive
Israeli elections last summer. Whether or not the two men
will swap positions in another year as agreed upon is a matter
of intense speculation.

JEWISH TERRORISTS or defenders of the faith? That was the question debated
during the long trial in Jerusalem of 25 members of a Jewish underground charged
with acts of violence against Arabs. They were convicted and three were sentenced
to life in prison.

VIOLENCE IN ISRAEL became an increasingly serious
problem this year, with a number of Israeli civilians murdered
by Arabs. Security was stepped up with soldiers checking
Arab residents.
