Paris (JTA) — The six promi-
nent Lebanese Jews kidnapped
in recent months are alive and
in the hands of the Hetzbollah,
the extremist pro-Iranian. Shiite
faction, according to a senior
Lebanese government official.
President Amin Gemayel's
chief of protocol, Marun
Haimari, said in a cable to Paris
last Wednesday that the six
Jewish hostages were alive.
Haimari advised the president
of the Representative Council of
French Jews (CRIF), Theo
Klein, to intercede on their be-
half through the Syrian and Li-
byan governments. ,Haimari also
mentioned Lebanese Education
Minister Selim Hoss and
Hetzbollah leader Shaikh
Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah
as possible contacts.
Klein has repeatedly cabled
and written Gemayel and other
Lebanese leaders to try and ob-
tain the liberation of the six, or
at least to ascertain their fate.
Last week's cable was the first
formal acknowledgement that
the six are alive. The missing
six are:
Dr. Elie Hallack, 55, vice
president of the Central Com-
mittee of the Lebanese Jewish
community who was kidnapped
from his home last March; Elie
Srour, ,50, also kidnapped in
March outside his electrical
equipment store in Central Be-
irut; businessman Haim Cohen,
50; Isac Sasson, 65, president of
the Lebanese Jewish community
who was kidnapped by an armed
gang on March 31 while on his
way from Beirut International
Airport to the center of the city;
Isaac Tallab, a teacher who was
kidnapped sometime in July;
and Selim Jamous, the commu-
nity's former secretary genefal
who has been missing since
August.

Chemical
War Threat

Washington (JTA) — The

Washington Post, in an article

on the growing proliferation of
chemical weapons throughout
the world, quoted documentation
which said that Syria has
"probably the most advanced
cheinical-warfare capability in
the Arab world" with the possi-
ble exception of Egypt.'
The Post quoted a September
1983 U.S. intelligence estimate
from the Central Intelligence
Agency and other sources, first
made public by columnists Jack
Anderson and Dale Van Atta in
August 1984. That repoit. , ac-
cording to the Post, indicated
that as of .1983, no Sytian prod-
uction' facility • had heed > iden-
tified and there was "no' need"
in view of chemical agents and
delivery, systems ?reportedly
flowing: from the ,Soviet • Union
and Czechoslovakia::
Regarding, Israel,, the fPost,
quoting the CIA estimates and
other sources, said it,tmdpr took
a chemical weaponai,ptogram
after, large amounts of
5ov,igt supplied equipment from
its Arab foes in the 1967 and
1973 wars.
