Amos Bracha
traveling everywhere on a mule.
He taught three or four classes
together.
Amos's rapport with his stu-
dents and his personal charm
made him a prime political can-
didate, and in 1959 he became
head of the local council in Or
Akiva — the equivalent of
mayor.
His first concern was to im-
prove conditions for the local
youth, but he also put consider-
able effort into bringing indus-
try and employment to the large
and centrally located develop-
ment town.
After two successful terms, he
was appointed adviser on
minorities to the Minister of
Welfare and, after the Six Day
War, he worked for a time for
the military government on the
West Bank. At the same time,
he continued his academic
studies, gaining two degrees in
administration and in social
work.
Today, Amos is the father of
six children and lives in the
Jewish Quarter of the Old City
of Jerusalem, putting his con-
siderable talents to use as dis-
trict director of the Ministry of
Welfare. He looks back on his
experience in the ma'abara and
in the agricultural settlement as
an enriching one.
Amos recalls a simpler Israel,
when children looked up to their
elders, when education was the
key to a brighter future and
when the citizens of the state
felt the privilege every day of
fulfilling a national and per-
sonal dream.
