home to join 123,500 other Iraqi
immigrants in a mass aliyah

until they obtained an exit per-
mit which would allow them to
'go to Israel. It was in Persia
that they received their first
taste of camp life.
"We slept on mattresses and
there were only a few public
bathrooms and faucets for
everyone," recalls Devorah
Batat.
In the camp "false" families
were organized: young people,
widows and small families were
attached to larger ones to
facilitate the aliyah process and
to fully utilize the few available
exit permits.
Finally, a few days before the
Jewish festival of Shavuot, the
Batat family, plus two extra
"sons," were flown to Israel. It
was a very emotional day in
their lives. They were processed
at an immigrant camp in Atlit,
where they underwent medical
examinations, and then were
sent to the ma'abara at Beit Lid,
near Netanya, where they lived
for the next 18 months.
At first, all the food supplies
were distributed and the family
had to learn how to use mar-
garine and cook fillet. Later, the
immigants received coupons
which could be redeemed for
food of their choice in local
shops or in Netanya.
Devorah's mother had the
foresight to bring a petilya (par-
afin burner) and they were
among the first who were able
to cook a pot of soup or -make
hot tea.
Devorah was then 15 —' her
older sister was 17 and a
younger one was 12 — and suf-
