May the coming
year be filled
with health and
happiness for
day Israel where religious
tolerance is on the decline."
Yerach Glatter the spokesper-
son of Bar-Ilan, talks of the
University as being based on
three equal pillars: the Jewish
religion, scientific excellence,
and responsibility to the wider
society.
In some departments, tradi-
tional Judaism and modern sci-
ence is combined, as in Bar-
Ilan's Center for Computers and
Jewish Heritage, where the
University's IBM 3081 computer
has 'memorized' all the major
works of Responsa — written
questions and answers on reli-
gious matters — as well as the
36-volume Babylonian Talmud
and of course the Bible.
In the natural sciences Bar-
Ilan has an enviable reputation
among Israel's universities. For
the lectures in these science de-
partments there is no conflict
between their pursuit of scien-
tific knowledge and modern
religious orthodoxy. Professor
Albeck, himself a noted chemist,
explains that religion moves in
a parallel direction with science
but never meets. This is because
religion is a matter of faith
whereas science is a question of
facts and figures. He stresses
that all opinions are taught at
Bar-Ilan, including the studying
of theories that go against reli-
gious opinion, as he feels the
university has a duty to ensure
full academic freedom. He does,
however, add that the students
are taught how to oppose such
theories.
Eight years ago, Bar-Ilan
opened its doors to the commu-
nity at large with a new pro-
gram for senior citizens, called
the Brookdale Program.
Established by Bar-Ilan to-
gether with the Brookdale
Foundation of New York, this
program is the first of its kind
in an Israeli institution. The re-
tirees attend regular classes as
well as special courses. The pro-
gram, termed by Professor
Emanuel Rackman, president of
the university, as "highly suc-
cessful exercises in inter-
generational communications,"
is being carefully watched by
other universities as a model to
serve interested senior citizens.
As Professor Emanuel
Rackman, the President of the
University since 1977 points
out, "Our role in Israel is that
we're the only institution where
both Judaism and democracy
are practiced. There is a positive
attitude to religion but no coer-
cion and secular and observant
Jews live together and study to-
gether. In essence, we're a
model for the rest of Israel."
