THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, September 13, 1985 lalln Ilan Best wishes for a happy, healthy New Year Ethel & James Schossberger How is it that Bosley has be- come such a familiar figure as the omniscient family man? Bos- ley shrugs his shoulders. What- ever, Bosley's own father was no role model. "My dad was low- key," he says. "He was unsuc- cessful as a businessman. He was a dreamer, a tremendous ladies' man. He was no discip- linarian." Bosley fondly recalls the time his father came home from work to be greeted by his wife's warn- ing that Tom and his brother had misbehaved. "Go discipline the kids," she told her husband. "Well, my father came into our room with a strap," recalls Bosley. Instead of hitting torn and his brother, he made some pillow talk. "He would hit the pillow with the strap and then tell us, "Scream.' " Bosley laughs. "He was a softie." "Howard Cunningham was a character from a moral back- ground raised by a set of rules which a lot of people today think was ridiculous," says Bos- ley. "He tried to impart those rules." It was important to Bosley that Howard Cunningham be seen as a moral but flawed father. He was to be a real par- ent — not an apotheosis of the role. "I didn't want to make him another Ozzie Nelson or Robert Young." says Bosley. Though Bosley's great-grand- father was the first chief Or- " thodox rabbi of Chicago, Bosley himself is not what he terms a "practicing religionist." He was raised, however, with an appre- ciation of Judaism. Bosley has always felt a spe- cial closeness to his mother, who subsidized her son's forays into show business. "My mother was a concert pianist, a total lady in every sense of the word," says Bosley. "When my parents got divorced" — Bosley was 11 at the time — "she had to go out and work for the first time at the age of 45. She never dis- couraged me. She always sent checks to me." Indeed, when Bosley got his first starring role in the off- Broadway production of Thieves' Carnival, he made $20 a week — although it cost him $30 a week to live. "I was able to pay my mother back over a long period of years, says Bosley proudly. His take-home pay has im- proved considerably. "I never dreamed I would get as far as I have," says Bosley, whose early jobs as hat checker at Lindy's restaurant and as doorman at Tavern on the Green helped see him through lean times. "I thought I'd just be a working ac- tor." "In a lot of those lean days, I was willing to accept what I was doing. Maybe I inherited that from my dad, that dream of doing what I wanted to do." The LaGuardia role has served Bosley well over the years. "I was amazed at how quickly the lines came back," says the actor.
