ters in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv,
fa, Beersheva and Ramat
. Shelters receive no money
the municipalities, Natal-
said. Funds also will be used
uild shelters where none
t. If homes cannot be found
them, they will be
anized humanely by injec-
instead of falling victim to
Boning, she said. About
000 stray cats and dogs are
troyed yearly, frequently by
chnine, Natalson said, add-
, often it accidentally claims
lives of household pets.
HAI is working to overcome
tural and religious objections
spaying animals, which is an
ective means of population
trol. Because of opposition
m the Orthodox community
Jerusalem, that shelter spays
ales, but does not neuter
les since it violates a Biblical
unction.
Most veterinary medical
pplies are expensive because
ey are imported. Therefore,
AI is providing needed drugs
d material, partially to help
elters provide low-cost spay-
g and neutering services.
Contributions to CHAI's
dopt-An-Animal-In-Israel Pro-
am cover veterinary care and
forts to find homes for un-
anted animals. Donations have
me from adults and children,
atalson said, noting that
urth graders from Hillel in
armington, raised $263 when
ey held a bake sale during Be
ind to Animals Week (May
0).
Linda Gale, the teacher who
rganized the sale, decided to
elp CHAI because she's "a big
eliever in animal rights." She
ad discussed animal rights
ith her students during the
ourse of the year, and, since
e was part of a Hebrew school,
ecided to help animals in Is-
ael.
The money helped purchase
edical supplies for the ASPAs
n Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Gale
nd her husband went to Israel
his summer to deliver the
oods.
CHAI has about 400 Jewish
nd non-Jewish members and
chapters in New York, Philadel-
hia, Baltimore, Miami-Ft.
Lauderdale and the Washington,
D.C. area. Its advisory board in-
cludes Cleveland Amory,
president of the Fund for Ani-
mals, Nobel Prize-winning
author Isaac Bashevis Singer
and Rep.. Tom Lantos (D-Calif.),
and his wife, Annette, who were
instrumental in getting land for
a new shelter in Tel Aviv. •
