THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, September 13, 1985 OBITUARIES Wishing all our family and friends a year of health and happiness Ethel Elconin Ethel Chover Elconin, linking the activities of the Chover and Elconin families, was for at least three decades of her 87 years a consistent participant in major women's movements here. She was especially active in Hadassah, Histadrut, the Labor Zionist movement, and was associated with the Jewish Na- tional Fund and related move- ments. Her interest in Israel re- lated to the leadership of many in her family, including her nephew George (Mike) Zeltzer, former president of the Jewish Welfare Federation. Her inter- ests extended to social service agencies affiliated with Federa- tion. A school teacher for more than 40 years, she had the dis- tinction of being among the very first in Michigan to be a teacher for the deaf. She also had impor- tant roles in the history and lit- erature departments of Cody High School and Durfee Junior High School. "My aunt was among the most charitable people in our midst," Zeltzer said. "She had many so- cial instincts that inspired her in her work in the public school system, as an affiliate among other movements with the Sholem Aleichem Institute and her devotion to Israel and Zionism. She was truly a leader in all these affiliations." Mrs. Elconin, who died Sept. 6, is survived by.
