with a sense of Jewish his-

posed by the original com-

wanted to share not just

Let us look forward to that

the Middle East will return
to our faith.

For Emeritus

We notice in the past several
issues of The Jewish News paid
notices by several temples in
this area. Many of them in list-
ing the names of their spiritual
leaders, the rabbis, show the
names of the fully active rabbis
above the name of the Rabbi
Emeritus ...
We have also noted, when we
visit the Detroit area and read
in some Temple notices of the
activities and events of interest,
the letterhead listings of both
rabbinical and lay leaders show
the name of the rabbi emeritus
below that of the active rabbis.
Honor -- koved — is one of
the Almighty's highest com-
mands. Also, we believe our
wonderful people observe this
command more faithfully than
any other group, religious or
secular.
When a rabbi, or for that mat-
ter, any individual who has
after years of hard work and
faithful service reached the
status of emeritus, and this fact
set forth, we believe this person
deserves the koved of top book-
ing in his field.

The Yarmulke
And Government

Apropos the yarmulke and
government agencies (Aug, 23).
This writer, a practicing attor-
ney, has for many years ap-
peared in court wearing a yar-
mulke. In this area, judges ob-
serving this propensity of the
writer have been uniformly
friendly, with two exceptions.
In jurisdictions away from
this area, when appearing be-
fore judges previously unknown
to the writer, he would usually

precede the opening of a case
with "May I ask your honor's
indulgence for wearing a head
covering, by reason of religious
sentiment." The answer would
invariably be, "That is perfectly

all right."
The exceptions were, one with

a non-Jewish judge, who spotted
this writer in the court room,
and sent over the officer to have
the yarmulke removed. Later he
called me over and said that
there was that day a black Mus-
lim wearing a red fez, and the
judge ordered the removal of the
head gear. He had to treat this
writer the same, lest he be
charged with racism.
The other exception was a
Jewish judge, who had me ap-
proach the bench and said that
the Shulchan Aruch does not
require the wearing of a yar-
mulke. But he later reneged,
and there was no further ques-
tioning.

State Department
And PLO Terror

The State Department wants
us to believe that the mainline
PLO is not a terrorist organiza-
tion — only the "radical" ele-
ments are.
Fact: The PLO recently
claimed responsibility for the at-
tack by an Arab-on five Israeli
children (ages 8 to 10) on their
way to a Jerusalem swimming
pool. The PLO said that "it was
an 'entrance examination' that
new PLO recruits must pass be-
fore being accepted into the
(mainline) PLO."
The State Department should
be called to account for its ter-
minology and view of PLO ter-
rorism.
