For Chessmen

Graz, Austria — Reversing an
earlier decision, the United
States chess team will attend a
tournament in Dubai next year
even though Israeli chess
players will be, denied entry
visas.
"Our original intention was
not to go if Israel could not
play," Donald Schultz, the U.S.
delegate to the 'World Chess
Federation said last weekend.
"But the general assembly has
decided to appoint a committee
to look at modifying the bylaws
with and eye to avoiding prob-
lems of visas and noninvitations
arising in the future."
Dubai is a member of the
Arab League and claims that it
is in a state of conflict with Is-
rael.

Herzog Scraps
Clemency Idea

Jerusalem (JTA) — President
Chaim Herzog, in apparent
agreement with Police Minister
Moshe Nissim, has killed a pro-
posal by Justice Minister, Haim
Barley to grant clemency to
some 1,500 inmates in Israel's
prisons.
The proposal, which would
have shortened by three' months
the sentences of prisoners due to
be released in the next Jewish
year — some 400 would be re-
leased by Rosh Hashanah —
was aimed at easing Israel's
overcrowded prisons. Barley
made his proposal during a visit
with Premier Shimon Peres to
Ramla prison last week. He also
revealed plans to build a tent
camp in the Negev to rehabili-
tate security prisoners. It would
accommodate some 1,000 pris-
oners.

Home Daubed

Santiago (JTA) — The private
home of Chile's chief rabbi,
Angel Kreiman, was daubed
with swastikas in the latest in a
growing wave of anti-Semitic
acts, the World Jewish Congress
(WJC) reported last week.
The Comite Representativo De
Las Entidades Judias de Chile,
the Central representative body
of Chilean Jewry and the WJC
affiliate in Chile has publicly
denounced these incidents and
has taken their protests to gov-
ernmental authorities.

She's All Wet

New York (JTA) — Julie
Ridge has set an unprecedented
record by swimming around
Manhattan. Island for five con-
secutive days.
The former Broadway actress,
who appeared in Oh Calcutta,
had previously been the first
person to swim two consecutive
laps around Manhattan (in
1983) finishing the course in
just over 21 hours.
