Claims of possessing the ex- clusive route to God are not uni- que with Protestant fundamen- talists...Each year, a week or two before Rosh Hashana, the chief rabbi ofJerusalem warns that ci- ty's residents that God will not hear the shofar if it is blown in a Conservative synagogue. And in this country no less an authority than Rabbi Joseph B. Soleveitchik has declared in ef- fect that God will not hear the prayers of any Jew who wor- ships in a synagogue in which men and women sit together. Silberman understands that his book is not likely to endear him to all readers, particularly those with vested interests in one or another side of the burn- ing issues he scrutinizes with what some might consider reckless — and others might con- sider courageous — impartiality. "I tried very hard not to of- fend people," Silberman com- mented. "I tried to avoid gratuitous insults. But there are people who inevitably, became targets because something they have written is wrong." Silberman withholds judge- ment, for instance, on the new generation — and breed — of Jewish communal professional, personified, by Stanley Horo- witz, the new chief executive of the national United Jewish Ap- peal. Has administrative effi- ciency. replaced "heart" in Jewish fund raising? Horowitz says no, his critics say it's an issue, and Silberman suggests a wait and see approach. Congregation Marks 350th Amsterdam (JTA) — Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and Prince Consort Claus were the guests of honor at a synagogue service in Amsterdam Sunday celebrating the 350th anniver- sary of the Amsterdam Ashkenazic Congregation. Meanwhile, in West Germany, Chancellor Helmut Kohl has congratulated the Jewish com- munity. in Augsburg on the reopening of the synagogue there, destroyed ,during the notorious Kristalnacyt of 1938. Erlichman and H.R. Haldeman, among others, as Jews, Silberman reports. What worries Silberman about the Jackson adoption of Third World rhetoric — and its anti- Semitism — is "not just that it represents the first systematic use of anti-Semitism as a political device, but that it could become the dominant foreign policy view within the Democratic party." And the Democratic party is where Silberman believes the Jews belong. He's pleased that 63 percent of Jewish voters in the last election supported Walter Mondale, "son of Hubert." He finds comfort in the knowledge that "most blacks understand coalition politics, that the black-Jewish coalition has remained reasonably strong" and that "while black leaders are among the most anti- Semitic, the black rank and file are much less so." If Bailey Smith is forgiven and Jesse Jackson explained (though not excused) by Silberman, the rigidity of the Jewish libral establishment on church-state issues receives harsh treatment: In the absolutist position Jewish liberals take on church-state issues...they sometimes sound as extreme (and at times -as in- tolerant) as the fundamentalists they oppose. One reason is a failure to distinguish the general question of the relation between religion and politics from the specific questions involved in the debate over abortion, school prayer and other church-state issues — a failure to recognize. that Ronald Reagan was right when he said that religion and politics are inseparable and wrong when he advocated a return to school prayer. Like it or not, politics and religion are mixed, Silberman argues. It is crucial, he says, to find ways to mix them that will strengthen rather than weaken America's pluralistic society. But it's not only the Jewish left that Silberman takes to task. In a note to the Bailey Sthith incident, Silbermaik 26571 W 12 Mile Rd Corner Northwestern riwy Diaspora, but you, the members of the.
