with their Jewishness which he
sees manifested regularly in the
behavior of his own sons and
their friends.
[The Silberman progeny were
very much on their father's mind
as he wrote his book. The dedica-
tion is to his first grandson, Mat-
thew Josef Silberman, the first
member of the fifth generation
of Silbermans in America. An
added inscription, "Behold, our
children are our guarantors,"
further attests to Silberman's
satisfaction, by and large, with
the youthful generation of
American Jews.]
The Shapiro stories are
especially
warm and flattering. Similarly
admiring sketches appear in the
book about other business
leaders such as Gerald Green-
wald, vice chairman and heir-
apparent to Lee Iococca at
Chrysler, and Reuben Mark,
chairman and chief executive of-
ficer of Colgate-Palmolive Com-
pany. Successful Jewish
lawyers, university presidents,
intellectuals, journalists and
religious leaders also people
Silberman's lively pages, as do
some significant non-Jewish
personalities.
Some readers may think
Silberman is too easy on the
Reverend Bailey Smith, the fun-
damentalist preacher who
announced that God doesn't hear
the prayers of Jews:

not take long for. Bailey Smith to
be inducted'iltto the (American
publid religion of civility. Three
months after his controversial
statement, Smith...met with
officials of the Anti-Defamation
League... and in,a, joint press
release (it was declared that' "if
he had it to do over again, know-
ing how it would be misinter-
preted, he would not have made
those statements. He said he has
distinctitie theological beliefs
that he cannot compromise, but
he stands with the Jewish com-
munity for total religious liberty.

But Silberman does not delude
himself that there is a surge of
philo-Semitism abroad. Nor does
he underestimate the anti-
Semitism evidenced by black
leaders and young blacks. The
one exception to his string of
good news on the decline of anti-
Semitism in America is that it
has been increasing somewhat in
the black community, especially
among younger persons with
higher education and black
leaders, "the most anti-Semitic
of all." Silberman attributes this
to blacks' adoption of the
political anti-Semitism that per-
vades the ideology of the left
worldwide.
Jesse Jackson's campaign, for
example, reflected his Third
World orientation in which "col-
onialism" and "imperialism"
figure as the principal enemy.
The "abstract" nature of
Jackson's attitude towards Jews
is evidenced in his apparent in-
ability to distinguish Jews from
