Jewish liberals take on
church-state issues . . . they
sometimes sound as extreme
(and at times as intolerant) as
the fundcgmentalists they op-
pose. One, reason is a failure to
distinguish the general ques-
tion of the relation between
religion and politics from the
specific questions involved in
the debate over abortion, school
prayer and other church-state
issues – a failure to recognize
that Ronald Reagan was right
when he said that religion and
politics are ihseparable and
wrong when he advocated a re-
turn to school prayer.

will strengthen rather than
weaken America's pluralistic
