men's groups. Stories abound
about those who, taken to
meetings by married friends,
find on arrival that the con-
versation focuses on hus-
bands and children, excluding
the potential member.
Often, those who are look-
ing for a place to belong will
shift their interest as vol-
unteers from the Jewish to
the general community through
political clubs, Big Brothers
and Big Sisters, Service
Clubs and health-related
agencies. It is not likely that
those who have felt rejected
in the JeWish ethnic organiza-
tional world will feel free to
enter the religious world
where, they believe, they
have been historically un-
welcomed.
Other organizations can
fulfill some of the needs of the
single Jewish woman, but the
synagogue has a monopoly
on meeting her spiritual and
religious needs. Yet syna-
gogues have been notable for
their adherence to the tradi-
tional tenets of recognizing in
their structure only the fami-
ly composed of two parents
and their children. Statistics
demonstrate that this "typi-
cal" family is an endangered
species. The synagogue must
accept and encourage diversi-
fication among its member-
ship; in doing so, it will weave
a stronger fabric for the total
Jewish community.
Unmarried Jewish heads of
households— divorced, wid-
owed and career women — all
face complex problems in
their daily lives which can be
explored by rabbis and teach-
ers, providing an environ-
ment for understanding the
traditions and applications of
Judaism in a contemporary
context.
It is the responsibility of
the religious community to
provide learning throughout
the life cycle, not just to com-
plain when Jews marry out-
side their faith. Rather than
perpetuate the jokes about
Rhoda and her quest for a
husband, leaders must' ack-
nowledge there is more4o en-
suring an emotionally satisfy-
ing single life than having
"singles" dances.
Approaches to discovering
and then encouraging unmar-
ried women, to join in the
religious Jevrish community
may not be easy. An 'excellent
resource already exist§ —
networks. Talking to women
