Dinner • Chairman Chosen

Carmi M. Slomovitz has been
named chairman of the annual
testimonial dinner of the Michi-
gan Region of the American Red
Magen David for Israel (ARMDI)
to be held 6 p.m. Oct. 13 at Adat
Shalom Synagogue.
Dr. John J. Mames, chairman of
the Michigan Region, and Dr.
Morris Starkman, chairman
Medical-Dental Council ARMDI,
said that the event will honor
Grant Silverfarb and Louis Sil-
verfarb.
Slomovitz, business manager of
The Jewish News, is active on be-
half of numerous community and
Israeli philanthropic and educa-
tional causes.
With his wife, Sharron,
Slomovitz serves on the board of
the Michigan Region ARMDI and
they are the founders-patrons of
the new Magen David Adom
(MDA) National Blood Center
under construction in Ramat Gan.
They also established a MDA
Paramedics Training Scholarship
and are recipients of the ARMDI
Humanitarian Award and Help-
ing Hands Awards for "their last-
ing dedicated involvement in the
well being and in the destiny of
that nation , through the
humanitarian efforts of Magen
David Adom (MDA), Israel's
Emergency Medical, Blood and
Ambulance Service."
Slomovitz counts among his

dinner will aid the new MDA Na-
tional Blood Center and will help
to relieve some of the financial
difficulties facing MDA. A special
testimonial dinner tribute com-
mittee is in formation.

first congregation in the country
to offer a post-confirmation pro-
gram for exceptional youngsters.
The classes are a new addition
to the temple's religious school
instruction for children with
special needs. Now in its 11th
year, the program for the handi-
capped includes youngsters who
are educable mentally impaired,
trainable mentally impaired,
learning disabled, and smotion-
ally impaired.
Rose Werney, who developed
the program and has been its
coordinator, explained that its
specially trained staff will ad-

There is no other such program

in the country where youngsters
such as these take part in a
congregational confirmation, ac-
cording to Mrs. Werney. Many
of the teens have also celebrated
their b'nai/b'not mitzvah with
the congregation during Sab-
bath services.
Temple membership is not re-
quired for entrance into the ex-
ceptional student program, and
children are accepted beginning
at age 5. During the course of
their religious school instruction
they study the holidays, Bible
heroes, Israel, moral values,
tudalsah, Israeli music and in.
