DINNER $ di
FOR TWO JL

BY DON McEVOY
Special to The Jewish News

It has been a source of embar-
rassment for several years now.
Not being important enough,
that is, to have been on Nixon's
Enemies List. Almost everyone
whom I held in high esteem at
that period was on that roster,
but not me. I really believed
that my credentials should have
qualified me, but obviously I
was such small potatoes that the
White House gang never gave
me even a moment's considera-
tion. That was an embarrassing
slight.
Now I have found another list
that I ought to be on. It isn't
that I want to be on it, but if
I'm being overlooked this time, I
simply have not made the mark
I set for myself many years ago
when I determined to get in-
volved in trying to help find
some solutions to America's
problem of interracial and inter-
religious relations.
Louis Beam, author of Essays
of a Klansman, has charted a
point system for assassination in
what he designates at the Fifth
Era of Klan activity in America.
The Fifth Era is now. It is based
on the theory that the Klan
cannot win great numbers to its
ranks by marching down Main
Street, but must systematically
engage in acts of pre-planned
murder and terrorism.
I am sure that I don't qualify
as a Class A target which would
earn the assassin the title of
Aryan Warrior. You have to be
a liberal U.S. Senator, president
of a major Jewish organization,
or nationally promoted "Reli-
gious Leader" to be included in
that top. category.
But I ought to make it in
Class B or C. A murder in
either of these categories qual-
ifies the killer as either a Com-
mando or a Guerrilla. All one
has to do to get targeted as a
victim for aspiring candidates
for either of these titles is to
have supported civil rights legis-
lation, have friends who are
either blacks or Jews, or be an
idealist.
Even if they don't deem me
important enough to be
classified as a "rabble rouser,"
an "agitator, " or even a "White
secondary leader of a subordi-
nate Pressure Group," or a "sec-
ondary Religious Leader, jour-
nalist, or opinion moulder (sic),"
I don't see how they can over-
look my long time support of
equal rights or my selection of
friends without regard to race,
religion, age, ethnic heritage,
sexual preference, or any of the
rest of their artificial barriers.
As I 'said before, I do not re-
lish the idea 'of being on any-
body's hit list, but neither do I
want to be The Invisible Man.
Being on the Klan's list would
be something like the guy Alben
Barkley used to tell about who
was being ridden out of a Ken-
tucky town 'on a rail by the
, KKK. "If it weren't for the
honor of the thing," he said, "I'd
just as soon walk."
