Clones Isolated

Rehovot — A Weizmann Insti-
tute team has succeeded in
isolating the human gene re-
sponsible for a major nervous
system hormone, VIP. The re-
searchers now expect to use
their cloned genetic material to
determine whether youngsters
suffering from inherited diseases
of the nervous system suffer
from a malfunction of this or re-
lated peptide factor genes.
The genetic engineering work,
involving the use of syntheti-
cally produced genetic frag-
ments, was carried out by Dr. Il-
lana Gozes of the Department of
Hormone Research, Prof. Mati
Fridkin of the Department of
Organic Chemistry, and
gradaute student Mordechai
Bodner.

OSI Seeks
Survivors

The Justice Department's
Office of Special Investigation,
responsible for investigating and
civilly prosecuting Nazi war
criminals, is trying to locate
survivors from the towns of
Wischniowzik (Wysniowczyk),
Podhajce (Podgaitsy), and Be-
rezany in the Tarnopol Region
of Poland.
Persons who may be able to
provide information regarding
the treatment of local citizens
from these towns as well as the
Litiatyn Forest are requested to
write to Bruce W. Solow or Ms.
Ronnie L. Edelman, Office of
Special Investigations, U.S. De-
