New York (JTA) — Leaders of
the Jewish community in Zagreb,
Yugoslavia have written to the
American Jewish joint distribu-
tion Committee with a request
that the international relief
agency help it to identify people
whose family or friends are buried
in the Karlovac Jewish Cemetery.
According to the letter, received
on August 14, the Jewish commu-
nity has negotiated with the local
council of Karlovac for the "re-
newal of the Karlovac Jewish
Cemetery. It has been agreed that
the graves of Jews with survivors
willing to pay the regular fee for
maintaining the graveyard will
be taken care of but those of
others, with no living survivors,
will be exhumed and reinterred in
a communal giave inside the
newly enclosed part of the Jewish
cemetery."
The letter signed by Erich
Stern, secretary and Dragan Vol-
ner president, asks that those in-
terested in this matter contact the
community at the Jevrejska Op-
cina, Palmoticeva Ulica 16, 41001
Zagreb, Yugoslavia, before Oc-
tober 30th.

Boston (JTA) — Rabbi Richard
Yellin of Chestnut Hill, Mass. im-
plored some 600 Lutheran con-
gregants at a Sunday church serv-
ice this month in the East German
town of Leipzig to make every ef-
fort to understand Judaism and
the Jewish people.
Rabbi Yellin, spiritual leader of
the Temple Mishkan Tefila, de-
livered a brief sermon Aug. 11 at
the St. Thomas Church in what is
believed to be the first time a
rabbi has spoken at a church serv-
ice in the German Democratic Re-
public.

New York (JTA) — "Washing-
a front-page feature in
the Wall Street Journal reported
Monday that the Reagan-
Gorbachev meeting scheduled for
November "could address big
regional issues." The report item
quoted unnamed officials as be-
lieving "Moscow may be ready to
resume diplomatic relations with
Israel in return for a role in
Mideast peace talks."
In a related development,
Stuart Raskis, chairman of the
Grass Roots Action Network of
B'nai B'rith International, said in
Washington last week that Soviet
Jewry has become a pawn in
East-West relations. Historically,
Raskis said, conditions for Soviet
Jews improve when the United
States and the USSR are on rela-
tively good terms and they deter-
iorate when the relationship be-
tween the two nations cools.
"It probably would be to our ad-
- vantage to unhitch Soviet Jewry
from the big power relationship,"
the B'nai B'rith official said. "But
right now that seems to be im-
possible."
