THERE'S STILL TIME TO PREPARE
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Givatayim
Mayor Yitzhak Yaron and the
secretaries of the local Labor town
council and of the local branch of
the Labor Party have been ques-
tioned by the police, following a
complaint by Kach leader Rabbi
Meir Kahane that they had as-
saulted him during an outdoor
meeting he tried to hold in the
town earlier this month.
Rabbi Kahane and his followers
were forced to leave the area
without holding their rally be-
cause of a noisy counter-
demonstration during which the
rabbi was spattered with eggs.
Yaron denied Rabbi Kahane's ac-
cusation and said that neither he
nor the town council members
were involved in the counter-
demonstration.
Meanwhile, in Washington last
week, the state department said
that it was still studying whether
Rabbi Kahane lost his United
States citizenship when he be-
came a member of the Knesset in
August 1984.
Although accepting public
office in another country "may
signify intent to relinquish U.S.
citizenship, all relevant factors in
each case must be considered,"
Department Deputy Spokesman
Charles Redman said.
Redman had no comment on
Rabbi Kahane's announcement in
New York last week that he has
resigned as head of the Jewish De-
fense League which he founded in
1968. Kahane said he was doing
so to make it easier for him to get a
visa to enter the United States if
the Knesset adopts a proposed law
forbidding dual citizenship by its
members.

Peres Meets
Zulu Chief
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Prime Minis-
ter Shimon Peres told Zulu chief
Gatsha Buthelezi last week that
Israelis prayed for equal ranks in
south Africa and for coexistence
between all the ethnic groups
there.
Peres met with the head of the
Zulu tribe for the second time dur-
ing Buthelezi's weeklong visit to
Israel. Israel Radio reported that
Israel will apparently participate
in development projects in the
Zulu tribal homeland, in the fields
of water use and education.

Christians
For Israel
Jerusalem (JTA) — An ex-
pected 500 Christian lay leaders
and theologians, active suppor-
ters of Israel, from more than two
dozen nations gathered this week
in Basel, Switzerland, to reaffirm
their commitment to Israel and to
the Jewish people, and to chal-
lenge others to follow their exam-
ple.
The Rev. Jan Willem van der
Hoeven, spokesman for the Chris-
tian Embassy, told a press confer-
ence that Israel should be pre-
sented "as more than a mere secu-
rity asset for the west, and a secu-
lar state." He said the stress at the
Basel conference will be on the
spiritual significance of Israel.
