Shootings Spur Review
Of West Bank Security
Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Cabinet reviewed Sunday the de-
teriorating security situation in
the administered territories, fol-
lowing the murder Saturday of an
Israeli in Tulkarem and the seri-
ous wounding of another Israeli in
the town of Jenin, in the north of
Samaria.
A curfew imposed after the at-
tacks in Tulkarem, some 15 miles
west of Nablus, and in Jenin,
some 20 miles north of Nablus,
was lifted for two hours Sunday
afternoon to allow local residents
to purchase food supplies.
Andre Aloush, 40, of Netanya
was fatally shot in the back with a
.38 caliber pistol Saturday morn-
ing shortly after he entered a
jewelry store in the center of Tul-
karem.
Aloush, who had been accom-
panied into Tulkarem by his wife,
brother and sister-in-law, was
shot at very close range. He died
on his way to the hospital. His as-
sassin disappeared into a crowded
street.
In Jenin, four hours later, Uri
Ovad of Tiberias was shot three
times in the back with a .22
caliber pistol. He was in serious
condition with a bullet lodge
near his spine. His assailant e
taped also.
Initial investigation did no
show any obvious link betwee
the two attacks. But the Palestin
Liberation Organization claim
responsibility for both. The PL
Wafa news agency in Tunis sai
that two Palestinian combat um
killed two Israeli secret servi
officers.
The Cabinet meeting Sunda
took place amid growing publ .
pressure to step up securit
measures in the territories, i
cluding collective punishment,
need be. At least a dozen Israe
have been killed in the West Ba
within the past year.
Last month, three residents
Afula, in the Jezreel Valley, we
killed. The murders at that ti
increased pressure on the Cabin
to take specific measures to ate
up security and to implement
death penalty for terrorist m
dens.
Instead of dealng with the iss
of new legislation to impleme
the death penalty for terrori
murders, Cabinet decided th
