Colours by Alexander Julian mixes
richer, darker tones with vital brights.
"Traditional" shades of charcoal and
ash grey, navy, burgundy and ever-
green take on new prominence, as
dramatic backgrounds or as design
highlights. Lilac, magenta, violet, lupine
blue and orange-gold are used as
well as silvery salt and pepper, purple
haze, and cool sapphire.
In sweaters, a group of easy, over-
sized cardigans, cardigan vests and
pullovers in pure lambswool is in-
troduced. Bulky popcorn stitch knits
and oversized houndstooth motifs give
a year-round appeal to heavyweight
cotton crewnecks.
Alexander Julian creates variations
on traditional motifs, experimenting
with scale, adding innovative touches,
recasting patterns in an abstract
fashion. The front and back of a deep
teal wool crewneck are punctuated
with a series of irregular graphs. A
cream sweater vest improvises on
Amish quilt patterns. Unique color twist

Women aren't the only ones in-
terested in looking good. A slew of
new products for men show that
they, too, are now concerned with
skin care. According to local buyers,
items such as the "Lauder for Men"
line and the "Clinique Skin Supplies
for Men" are selling well although,
they add, primarily to younger men.
Lauder's line includes products
for cleansing, shaving, skin condi-
tioning, problem solving (oilness,
blackheads and ingrown hairs), and
grooming.
Clinique's line, fragrance-free and
hypo-allergenic, includes face soap,
scruffing lotion, "M" lotion for skin
dryness or shaving irritation, cream
shave, face scrub, bronzer, sham-
poo, hair spray, deodorant, and a
touch-stick for oily skin or problem
spots.
Other product lines for men are
Interface and Erno Laszlo, whose
products are made for men and
women.
The men's products can be found
in the cosmetic departments of local
department stores.

cables adorn a navy sleeveless vest.
In sport shirts and knits, solid cottons
in shades of aubergine, ash, charcoal,
navy or teal are shaped into the
roomiest, most comfortable shirts with
oversized chest pockets, enlivened
with dappled striations of bright color.
Plaids and stripes in cotton and cot-
ton blends acquire new power when
set on grounds of deep fir green, char-
coal, softened grey, lavender or plum.
Outerwear takes a new direction,
shaping grainy tweeds into waist-length
blouson jackets. Two-tone wool base-
ball jackets in combinations of navy
and green, crimson and charcoal, and
bright green with blue update a classic
sports story. All-cotton poplin bombers,
blousons and parkas combine color
blocks and bandings in bright shades
of teal, raspberry and purple with solid
styling elements of detachable hoods,
zippers concealed by velcro closures
and snap front pockets.
In dress and casual slacks, there are
polished gabardines, heathery flannels,
classic tartans realigned and set on
herringbone fabrics. Styling includes
plain front or box, inverted and drop
pleated options, pointed and squared
extension waistbands, tunnel and plain
belt loops, the graceful finish of cuffs.
