amount of topcoats and overcoats in
wool tweeds and cashmere," says
Harry Kosins. Cashmere topcoats have
been a big seller in Detroit the last few
years and remain strong for this fall as
well.
Look for casual, short jackets in wool
tweeds, some with leather trim. All-
leather coats and jackets are still
popular.
L'Uomo Vogue is displaying a three-
quarter length navy and grey check-
ered coat with a navy rope drawstring
waist by Giorgio Armani.
For eveningwear, basic black tux-
edos are fashionable. Single-breasted
and double-breasted are in style, worn
with winged-collar white dress shirts.
According to Craig Hall, manager of
formalwear at Steve Petix in Birming-
ham, colored cummerbunds and tie
sets with paisley prints and stripes are
new for fall.
The theme for men's fashions in
Detroit is elegant and classic dressing.
According to Harry Kosins, who has
traveled to almost every city in the
United States, "The Detroit market is
the best dressed male audience in the
country."

The typical American male can slash
his clothing budget 40 to 60 percent by
shopping prudently, buying creatively,
and using some plain common sense.
Follow this advice on buying quality
men's wear without losing your shirt.
• Spend less on "invisible" items
such as socks, underwear and pa-
jamas. Save your money for clothing
people can readily see.
• Avoid fads. Stick to conservative
styles that will be around longer.
• Avoid flashy colors. Navy blue or
charcoal grey are best for suits.
Deeper, darker tones, subdued pat-
terns and stripes help you look taller,
slimmer.
• Check the quality of all garments.
Inspect the fabric.
Does it feel firm in your hand? In
more expensive garments, fabric has
a good "feeling" to it.
Check the lining. tHas it - en sewn
properly? Does it lie flat and neat?
When buying a suit, check the collar to
ensure that it lies flat, and doesn't curl

up.
• Finally, put the clothing on and
stand before a three-way mirror. Check
your appearance carefully. If the gar-
ment doesn't look good on you, don't
buy it, no matter what the price. Avoid
suits that require major alterations.
