Back To The Future:
New Looks From
Classic Clothes

BY CARLA SCHWARTZ

en's fall fashions in Detroit
are traditional, classic
clothes, now with subtle
patterns and textures in
deep, rich colors.
Dark colors — black, blue, brown —
are important for the conservative look.
Grey is a strong base color for the fall
wardrobe. The new twist is soft tweeds,
and light pinstriping.
Highlight of this season's fashions in-
clude: double-breasted suits, oversized
sportcoats, patterned sweaters, leather
and leather-trimmed coats, and cash-
mere topcoats.
According to Ben Kosins, co-owner
of Kosins Clothes and Kosins Big and
Tall, both in Lathrup Village, the fall look
can be summarized in two words:
elegant simplicity.
"The clothes are elegant but very
conservative, to fit the mood of the
country and this area," says Rob
Wachler, vice president of John Kent
Stores in the Detroit area.
The traditional dark-colored, two-
button, single-breasted suit is always
fashionable for the Detroit corporate
image. Another stylish look is double-
breasted suits, which adds another
dimension to the basic, simple styles.
"We have been selling about one-half
or more of our inventory in double-
breasted clothing for over two years,"
says Robert Grumet, of R Grumet in
West Bloomfield.
For a less traditional, more European
look , ties play a key role.Grumet sells
imported silk ties in vivid patterns. The
interplay of the bright colors and
geometric designs on these ties re-
sembles modern art paintings. Knit ties
and paisleys also complement the
classic suit.
