New York (JTA) — Three women were given the Award of the Medal of the righteous for risking their lives and the lives of their families to help Jews during the Nazi Holocaust in Europe, at a ceremony at the Is- raeli consulate. The award, given by the Is- raeli government to "outstand- ing individuals" who are not Jewish, was presented by Am- bassador Naphtali Lavie, a Holocaust survivor and Israel's Consul General in New York. The Sward was presented to Jean Berger of Yonkers, N.Y., who saved Jews in the Ukraine; Sophia Ebro-Prokesh of Patter- son, N.J., who saved Jews in Po- land; and,Konstanca Brasiniene of Lithuania, who died in 1970, and was represented by her daughter,' Dr. Niola Brazenas of Sparkvil, N.Y. As part of the award, trees will be planted in honor of the recipients in Israel. 1 Southfield at 10 1/2 Mile • 569.6930 . Lee Roth 569-6900 1 Big & Tall "IT'S THE LEASE Aides To Jews. SOUTHFIELD, MI works by Gershwin in - addition to original orchestrations for two piano rhapsodies. George's brother, Ira, gave Tilson Thomas the unpublished works. "I saw Ira in the last years of his life. It helped close the cir- cle," says Tilson Thomas. Two years ago, Tilson Thomas' re- cording of "Gershwin. Live!" with Sarah Vaughan earned a Grammy Award. Tilson Thomas has earned the admiration of many who covet the American composer's role in the music world. "I like the can- dor of American music," he says. "It is very straightforward." He finds a "strong Jewish thread throughout" much of the music, citing Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland as important contributors. Also of noteworthy interest to the conductor has been opera. To his credit are the American premiere of Berg's "Lulu" (1979) and last year's "Fidelio" with the Houston Grand Opera. "Opera will occupy more of my time in the future. I would also like to find more time for writing, teaching and reflec- tion," he says. But always there will be music. "Music," says Michael Tilson Thomas, "is my con- stant."
