Jerusalem (JTA) — Israeli offi- cials expressed shock and grief this week at what they called a "hein- ous" attack which killed an Israeli diplomat and injured two embassy employees in Cairo. Albert Atrakchi, 30, an adminis- trative attache at the Israeli em- bassy in Cairo was killed and his wife, Bane, and the wife of another embassy diplomat, Mazal Menache, were injured when three men sprayed their car with submachine- gun fire. Israel Prime Minister Shimon Peres called the attack "a criminal terrorist act," the New York Times reported. A physician was being flown froin Israel to the Egyptian capital to help treat the women, who were to be brought back to Israel together with the body of the slain diplomat by an El Al plane. AUGUST 23, 1985 CLOSE-UP Various reports from Cairo gave differing versions of the attack. The Israelis were driving from their home in the Mandi suburb of Cairo to the embassy when they were at- tacked. According to one version, a red Fiat car which had been following the Israelis sped by and opened fire on their car, in which 17 bullets were later found. According to an- other version, an Arab approached the car and fired at the Israeli driver from a short distance. The attache was killed instantly. Diplomats who have served at the Israel Embassy say the Egyp- tians take exceptional precautions to ensure the safety of the Israelis there. According to a press attache at the Egyptian Embassy in Washing- ton Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Cairo issued the following statement on the killing: "We express both shock and re- gret at the murder of a member of the Israeli Embassy in Cairo. Jerusalem (JTA) — The continu- ing takeover of an apartment in the Arab marketplace in Hebron by six' Likud Knesset members has created friction between the Labor and Likud partners in the coalition gov- ernment and has led to a series of charges and counter-charges by the two sides. Premier Shimon Peres said Monday that the takeover by the MKs, headed by Geula Cohen of the Tehiya Party, who began the action last week after a group of nearby Kiryat Arba settlers took over the apartment and were twice ousted by Israeli security forces, was an effort , to outdo other extremist parties in appealing to extremist sentiments in Israel. But spokespeople for Tehiya and the Likud contended, at' the same time, that the squatters were exercising the legitimate right of Jews to settle anywhere in Bretz Yisrael. Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin visited Hebron Monday in what pro- ved to be a fruitless effort to con- vince the MKs to leave the apart- ment which they claim Jews from Hebron had bought from an Arab owner last week following the stab- bing of Yaacov Reiter, 45, of Kiryat Arba as he was walking through the marketplace, The Israeli army hail not been able to remove the MK. from the apartment because of par- liamentary immunity, ' Births" B'nai Mitzvah Classified Ads Editorials Engagements Obituaries Purely Commentary Danny Raskin Singles Sy' 40 , Womon's Nati Continued on Page 4 89 62 72 4 .68 ' sl 2 46 GO 36 64 A .
