when he was two years old,

though he played accordion and
piano at a young age, he had lit-
tle hope of going on to study
music, In his neighborhood the
economic situation dictated that
people went to work, not to col-
lege,
13ut, at 18, the hard-working
young, man got a job in the mail
room at CBS so he could try to
support himself while pursuing
studies at New York College of
Music which later merged with
Juilliard, While at CBS, a direc-
tor asked him to arrange some
songs for a musical adaptation
of The Drunkard,
This was the start of a career
that turned Manilow into the
man who makes the young girls
cry, With more than 26 consecu-
tive top 40 hits, this is a true
story of rags to riches — or
schmatas to schmaltz,
Aside from his musical talent,
his nice-Jewish-boy image, and
his seemingly sincere stage
presence; Barry Manilow is an
inspiration, He worked hard to
get where he is, He worked at
writing commercial jingles, sort-
ing mail, and arranging and
conceptualizing for Bette Midler,
Then his own talent won him
