the size of the canvas is pre-
determined, but inside the can-
vas, we are free to paint.
Some paint a portrait replete
with daubs of cruelty, with
streaks of selfishness, while
some paint on the small canvas
allotted to them, a portrait that
becomes a thing of beauty.
As we go through life, many
events happen to us: illness, be-
reavement. That's not our
choice. But how we react is our
choice — the brush is in our
hands.

said: "Go home! You are not to
return, unless your father re-
turns with you." What should
have been a moment of glory,
became a month of gloom. My
father naturally sided with the
teacher, as was the custom in
those days, and for the next 30
days, all my privileges were
taken away.
As I grew older, however, I

back childhood memories. It re-
minds me of the time my He-
brew teacher was discussing the
opening sentence of this week's
Torah portion.
In the story, Moses speaks to
the children of Israel and says:
"Behond, I set before you this
day a blessing and a curse: the
blessing, if ye shall hearken
unto the commandments of the
Lord your God which I command
you this day; and the curse, if ye
shall not hearken ..." The
teacher pointed out that these
words remind us, that every
person has a choice in life; that
we are free to decide the kind of
life we want to lead.
At that point, I objected. I
pointed out that there are times
when fate determinei our de-
stiny. What about a person who
is born with a sickly body? Did
he choose that condition? What
about a person whose parents
die in an accident, when he is
three years old, leaving him an
orphan, to be raised by various
relatives? Did he have a choice
in the matter? Do we not read
the prayer on the High Holy
Days: "B'rosh Hashanah - on the
