(Rated R) is superb. It's a seri-
ous, provocative, profoundly
moving film. Based on the suc-
cessful novel by Manuel Puig,
Kiss is the story of two men im-
prisoned together in a repressive
South American country.
Molina, played by William
Hurt, has been jailed for sexu-
ally molesting a young boy.
Valentin, played by Raul Julia,
has been jailed for belonging to
a terrorist group.
The two men couldn't be more
opposite. Molina, the homosex-
ual, lives in a world of fantasy,
forever retelling 'the stories of
trashy, campy, romantic films in
which he sees himself as the
heroine. Valentin, the
heterosexual, lives only in the
real world of action, fighting the
fascists, denying his own roman-
tic dreams.
Kiss is about a lot of things.
It's about freedom versus in-
carceration. It's about political
repression. It's about reality
versus fantasy. It's about sexu-
ality, and human beings finding
ways to relate to one another.
What is especially intriguing
is to follow the change in each
of the men. To see how Molina
moves finally to becoming part
of the real world where he must
take action. To see how Valen-
tin at last comes to .understand
his own need for fantasy.
William Hurt is absolutely
brilliant as Molina. It is an as-
tonishing performance. When

drugged-out intellectual in The
Big Chill. And now, this com-
pletely different role. What ver-
satility!
Raul Julia is excellent as the
revolutionary. Most of his work
up to now has been on Broad-
way, so you may not be familiar
with him. But in any case, this
is the best work he's done so far.
He's perfectly cast and he plays
with just the right mixture of
bitterness, passion and outrage.

works inexorably toward its
stunning climax, you are in•
creasingly gripped and involved.
And when it ends, you find
yourself haunted by these un-
forgettable characters.
Don't miss Kies of the Spider
