Colleges rarely reject a student because of financial aid, and often the more costly private colleges have huge endowments for scholarships. The Enoch Pratt Library car- ries several books listing little known sources of aid. Applications are both expen- sive, from $25 to $40 each, and time-consuming, so it is practi- cal to narrow down your choice to five or six schools. You should include at least one "back-up" school (a school you are rea- sonably certain will accept you) and a "reach" school (a school that is more competitive than the others to which apply. If you are lucky enough to have decided on one school that is absolutely your first choice, the Early Decision program is an alternative to explore. The program varies from school to school, but usually the applica- tion is due in mid-November and the decision arrives by mid-December. If you are ac- cepted, you may not to apply to any other schools. If you are re- jected, you may not reapply to the school in the same year. Write or call the admissions offices no later than October for your applications. Once they ar- rive, begin to fill out the statis- tical data. That is by far the easiest part, and it's a good idea to get it out of the way before you have a case of "application burn-out." Unless you have immaculate handwriting, type the applica- tion. No admissions officer is going to take time to decipher your handwritten application; he is much more likely to throw it away. If you do handwrite it, check to see if the application specifies black ink. Most applications ask for teacher recommendations. Choose a teacher who knows you well.
