In addition to teacher recom-

it's a good idea to ask employers
or volunteers coordinators to
write recommendations. Impor-
tent alumnae can't hurt either,
although don't ask someone who
'doesn't know you well.

will eliminate the cost of room
and board. Colleges rarely reject
a student because of financial
aid, and often the more costly
private colleges have huge
endowments for scholarships.
The Enoch Pratt Library car-
ries several books listing little
known sources of aid.

Applications are both expen-
sive, from $25 to $40 each, and
time-consuming, so it is practi-
cal to narrow down your choice
to five or six schools. You should
include at least one "back-up"
school (a school you are rea-
sonably certain will accept you)
and a "reach" school (a school
that is more competitive than
the others to which apply.
If you are lucky enough to
have decided on one school that
is absolutely your first choice,
the Early Decision program is
an alternative to explore. The
program varies from school to
school, but usually the applica-
tion is due in mid-November
and the decision arrives by
mid-December. If you are ac-
cepted, you may not to apply to
any other schools. If you are re-
jected, you may not reapply to
the school in the same year.
Write or call the admissions
offices no later than October for
your applications. Once they ar-
rive, begin to fill out the statis-
tical data. That is by far the
easiest part, and it's a good idea
to get it out of the way before
you have a case of "application
burn-out."
Unless you have immaculate
handwriting, type the applica-
tion. No admissions officer is
going to take time to decipher
your handwritten application;
he is much more likely to throw
it away. If you do handwrite it,
check to see if the application
specifies black ink.
Most applications ask for
teacher recommendations.
Choose a teacher who knows
you well.
Give the teacher plenty of
time to fill out the form, because
