As Guy defines them: My father inherited from his ancestors a deep devotion ' to Judaism. In addition to the Sabbath (I've already men- tioned the fact that he never went shooting or raced one of his horses on a Saturday), he observed the principal Jewish holidays, more out of respect for tradition than from religious zeal. He never failed to attend the services of Rosh Hashana, Yom Kip- pur, Passover ... and in my youth, on the eve of Yom Kippur, after the dinner pre- ceeding the fast, he'd always make me walk to the synagogue on the rue de la Victoire with him, wearing a tailcoat, white tie, and a silk top hat, to the astonishment of passers-by. When I was thirteen, we naturally celebrated my Bar Mitzvah, the equivalent of a First Communion. It was an elaborate ceremony (during which, I regret to say, I sang my part in the ritual terribly off-key). I well remember the Seder dinner, the evening before Passover (a feast com- memorating the Hebrews' exodus from Egypt in 1500 B.C.), when the entire family used to gather together. Along with the emotion I felt when I was called upon to recite the Manish Tana, I could vaguely sense the hid- den symbolism of the various rituals that accompany the • ceremony: Traditionally, several sym- bolic objects are placed in the center of the table, in front of the head of the fam- ily: a lamb bone, in memory of the lamb the Hebrews sac- rificed on the eve of the death of the first-born Egyp- tian sons; three matzoth (un- leavened bread), • com- memorating the Hebrews' hasty flight from Egypt when they were driven into exile by the Pharoah; bitter herbs, such as horseradish, recalling the severity of their slavery in Egypt; a paste made of mashed dates and figs, evok- ing the mortar the Hebrews had to mix in order to build the pyramids; and an egg, which, having neither a be- ginning nor an end, is infi- nite, thus symbolizing eter- nity and the hope of eternal recommencement. Seder was an 1 occasion for all of us to be together In a gay and cheerful mood. The most important rule in my parents' minds, of which I was reminded at every opportunity, was the one against marrying a woman who was not Jeivish, or not willing to be converted to the Jewish faith. Although I strayed from these teachings later on in life, they had, nevertheless, been constantly repeated to me during my youth. The outbreak of anti- • Semitism in France before the war, stimulated by the example of the Germans and intensified by hatred for the Popular Front, confirmed my sense of responsibility toward my fellow Jews in the tradition of my family. The painful experience of Vichy and of the Statute on Jews further reinforced my sense of solidarity, as did the gradual revelation of the martyrdom in the Nazi camps. I returned to the synagogue of the rue de la .Victoire in 1944, a few weeks after the Liberation of Paris, on the occasion of Yom Kippur. It was the first time I'd been there in four years. Few people were there. Those present had barely emerged from hiding, and many places, were empty. I couldn't help recalling the faces of those who should have been among us and who would never re- turn. The living, shadowlike, next to phantoms of the dead .. I was overwhelmed with emotion. There was some- thing strangely unreal about it, something terrible, almost unbearable. A poignant evo- cation of "the horror of hor- ror." , A review of so impressive a volume about such an important family must be accompanied by an apology that much more has been eliminated from comment. In its totality, The Wings of For- tune has a universal appeal. The family story enriches the record of the Rothschilds. Guy de Rothschild's is among the most significant volumes relating to contemporary history.
