THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS LETTERS Wayne L. Feinstein Executive Vice President Jewish Welfare Federation of Detroit . . . Problems Still Remain Kudos to the editor for his bringing to our attention Rabbi Finkel's report on Ethiopian Jewry (July 26). Recently, I brought some of these facts to light at a Board of Governors meeting of our Jewish Welfare Federation. The executive vice president, Mr. Wayne Feinstein, obligingly followed through without delay, seeking more in- formation. The reply was some- what similar to the one by Mr. Levene in your article and, frankly, I am not too happy. We cannot allow what hap- pened to the Sephardim to be repeated with the Ethiopian Jews. The original immigrants on "Operation Magic Carpet" were a devout community. The descendants are Israel's dis- cotheque, drugs and dregs society. Absorption left a lot to be de- sired and is being repeated by anti-clerical and secular Israelis responsible for much of the agi- tation in the conversion issue. Experience is the best teacher. Let us learn from our past ex- perience and not make the same mistake twice. Rabbi James I. Gordon U.S. Assistance To The PLO President Reagan tells the American Bar Association that we are at war with interna- tional terrorism, that we are dealing with "a new interna- tional version of Murder Inc.," and he calls the Palestine Lib- eration Organization one of the "world's most vicious terrorist groups." Elsa Solender's article in the July 26th issue about the prob- lems of absorption for Ethiopian Jews was an excellent and sen- sitive treatment of a very com- plex matter. Gary Rosenblatt's shorter article interviewing Sam Finkel of Baltimore recounts a problem that did exist at the beginning of the massive immi- gration last winter and last spring. Last April, a member of Fed- eration's board raised a question about facilities for religious practice and the cultural needs of the new Ethiopian immig- rants. We probed this issue through the Council of Jewish Federations and the United Is- rael Appeal, and I locked into it myself while in Israel the last week of June. Without commenting on the current controversy between the Ethiopian Immigrant Associa- tion and the Chief Rabbinate of Israel, we're satisfied that both the Ministry of Absorption and the Aliyah Department of the Jewish Agency are performing their responsibilities fully and with great sensitivity to the particular religious practices and cultural needs of the Ethio- pian olim. There is no denying that the PLO is a criminal organization, the pioneer of modern terrorism that has carried out thousands- of violent attacks — hijackings, bombings, kidnappings, mas- sacres . and assassinations. The question is why does the Ad- ministration let such a group of criminals have offices in New York and in Washington? Doesn't that mean we condone the rule of the gun? Doesn't it tell people that violence and the threat of violence against inno- cent people is legitimate and re- spectable? Allowing terrorists to have offices in America is only the tip of the iceberg in the Adminis- tration's most peculiar policy towards the PLO ... The US. Consulate in eastern Jerusalem is notorious for its pro-PLO ac- tivities. In fact, it is considered a would-be U.S. Embassy to a PLO state! That consulate ar- ranges meetings between visit- ing U.S. officials — including Congressmen invited by Israel — and supporters of the PLO. The Middle East bureau also supplies funds to a number of groups in Judea, Samaria (which they call "West Bank") and Gaza that support the goal of the PLO in destroying Israel, such as pro-PLO schools ... Senator Helms recently said, "Obviously, it is a work of char- ity to care for and educate or- phans; but do they have to be inculcated with hate propaganda through assistance of U.S. aid funds?" The problem, he says, is that our State Department is putting money in the hands of a leadership that uses the funds to reward PLO followers and deny assistance to those who are not. This is not humanitarian aid: it is building the PLO infrastruc- ture in Judea, Samaria and Gaza. The Administration does not practice what they preach.
