spicy to be good ... In fact, a
place like El Zocalo would
rather you didn't ruin your taste
buds and get the adverse opin-
ion about Mexican food by or-
dering it spicy ... unless you
like it as such.
Owner° Victor Cordoba and
daughter Cindy are quick to
recognize this very important
facet in Mexican dining ... and
want people to enjoy dining at
El Zocalo.
Ordering as you desire is very
important ... and El Zocalo's
waitpersons realize this ... You
won't get anything too spicy un-
less you ask for it.
Don't let me mislead you,
however ... by advancing this
word of caution ... Many Mexi-
can foods are very spicy, others
not so spicy ... Make certain
your waitperson knows the ex-
tent to which you want spiciness
... You'd be surprised how good
it tastes without being too spicy
... So if your digestive system
is too delicate, avoid the spicy
foods.
As far as not getting anything
too spicy unless you ask for it
... this was the case recently
when son Scott and daughter-
in-law Bonnie were in town
from Atlanta, Ga. ... She was
born on the Mexican border and
both lived in Texas ... They
asked for the green nacho dip
• . I tried a little and momen-
tarily lost the use of my vocal
cords ... However, the rest of
the meal was great ... No more
fire-eating experiences ... Our
table had appetizers of
guacamole with corn tortilla
chips and Queso Flameado
(flaming Mexican cheese) ...
There were enchiladas wrapped
around cheese filling; Wet Bur-
ritos (large flour tortillas filled
with beef, beans, lettuce and
tomato, topped with mild
Spanish sauce); Carne A La
Tampiquena (N.Y. strip steak,
beef taco and cheese enchilada)
• . Bonnie and I had Guisado de
Pollo (chicken cooked with on-
ions, green peppers and tomato
sauce). •
It was a truly good Mexican
dinner ... served by efficient
waiter Craig Shaha, who right-
fully asked all those ordering
Margaritas if they wanted salt
on their glasses.
The tortilla chips, soft tortil-
las and guacamole are all made
at El Zocalo ... no buying them
in big batches and heating like
some other restaurants who
serve supposedly Mexican food
... The portions are huge ...
enough for another meal ... and
Craig recognized this with his
carry-out boxes.
Unless you want to take some
home, order the small Super
Nachos dish ... As it is, you
still might have plenty left over.
Mexican food is very healthy
▪ . low in calories and high in
carbohydrates and protein ... It
also has much fiber.
El Zocalo, with its Mayana
and Aztec decor, celebrated an-
niversary number two July 17
... It seats 268 in five rooms of
what was formerly a bank and
then a bar.

The possibility still persists
... and even more so now ...
that there will be a Mexicotown
like Greektown ... Many people
who know and appreciate Mexi-
can food hope so.
There's a reason why ElZocalo
always has customers ... it has
become very well known to
South of The Border food lovers.
Authenticity is the word ...
El Zocalo has it ... all the way.
BLUE NILE Ethiopian res-
taurant had opening at new
locale in Trappers Alley, Greek-
town ... It's owned by Seifu
Lessanework and wife Felli
Mekash (in Ethiopia, wife
doesn't take husband's last
name) ... Hundreds of guests
came through the evening, in-
cluding Chuck Muer, Seifu's
former employer as manager of
Fairlane Charley's.
After working at Emperor
Haille Selassie's palace, Seifu
was with Hilton International
... Addis Ababa, Narobi, Cairo,
Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Montreal,
Teheran and Germany ... In
United States he was manager
at Windows of The World in
New York before working for
Churk Muer organization in
Ohio and Michigan.
Before evening was over, four
parties had been booked for
August and September ... not
including American Jewish
Committee meeting, Sept. 22 ...
Restaurant is open seven days
for lunch and dinner ...
Monday-Thursday, 11:30-9;
Saturday to 1 a.m. and Sunday,
3-9 ... Seifu is an Ethiopian
Jew.
IF YOUR CHILD or someone
else's or for that matter an
adult ... says they want to go
see the chipmunks, rabbits,
birds, etc. sitting on a stump
eating food ... chances are
they're talking about The Lazy
Lion on Orchard Lake Rd.
corner of Middlebelt ... Yes,
they do intersect in the area
even though in other regions
Orchard Lake Rd. and
Middlebelt both go north and
south.
Both areas by the window are
always filled ... and people
even get up to watch the ani-
mals do their thing ... It's got-
ten so popular that owners Noah
and Pat Lambert have had to
get an option on the land next
door so somebody doesn't buy it
and take away the scenic beauty
... or the animal dining area
... When dusk settles in, there's
even lights out there for the
"outside diners" to see.
The Lazy Lion is a casual
family restaurant ... very clean
. .. where own soups and
quiches are made ... and there's
a salad bar seven days a week
from 11:30 a.m. to closing ...
An atrium in the middle is open
to the sky ... People can sit and
look while it's raining or snow-
ing and be comfortable.
It seats 125 in padded booths
and at tables ... with beige and
brown motif .. and has been
owned by Noah and Pat since
February ... The Lazy Lon is a
free-standing building amid a
rustic atmosphere of woods on
one side ... clean and simple
