Friday, August 9, 1985 43 THE DETEDIT•JEWISH NEWS CANTOR IDF Clashes With Terrorists Tel Aviv (JTA) — Two Israel Defense Force soldiers were kil- led and two others were wounded in a clash with ter- rorists Monday in south Leba- non, an army spokesman an- nounced. The dead soldiers, both 19 years old, were identified as Eyal Cohen of Tel Aviv and Dror Hanan of Petach Tikva. They were the first IDF soldiers killed in Lebanon since last April and bring the Israeli death toll in the Lebanon war to 656. Earlier last week, IDF planes raided a pro-Syrian terrorist organization which has claimed responsibility for several suicide bombings in the security zone of south Lebanon recently. The IDF spokesman said that the target was a headquarters at the Lebanon Bekaa town of Shtoura, of the Syrian Nationalist Social Party (SNSP). All planes returned safely to base, he said. Meanwhile, two IDF soldiers were slightly wounded and two Lebanese were killed in a car bomb in the security zone in southern Lebanon July 31. The dead included the 13-year-old bomber. The same day, a terrorist bombing was avoided thanks to the wariness of a former police- man who spotted the device and alerted the bombsquad. The in- cident took place in the south- ern Jerusalem suburb of Talpiot Mizrachi. The bomb was lying on the sidewalk, outside a groc- ery store. Police called once again on residents of the capital to keep their eyes open for all suspicious objects. France Plans Dreyfus Statue Paris (JTA) — Alfred Dreyfus, who once split France in two, is now driving a wedge between two French ministers. Both De- fense Minister Charles Herny and Culture Minister Jack Lang are in favour of honoring Dreyfus with a statue but Lang wants it at the French military academy Ecole Ministers while Herny favors the site of the former Ecole Politechnique which Dreyfus attended. Lang, himself Jewish, ordered the sculpture last year. French Jewish painter, Tim, a part-time sculptor, planned a 10 feet high bronze sculpture which, he says, will be ready in about six months. Lang announced that he plans to have the monument erected in the main courtyard of the military academy in the heart of Paris. Herny, a fellow socialist, an- nounced that he is in favor of such a statue but that he wants it erected somewhere else. One of the sites he reportedly suggested is the former site of the Ecole Polytechnique, a top level military engineering school which Dreyfus attended.
