Compromise Sought
In an effort to achieve a com-
promise over the resistance of
Ethiopian Jews in Israel to
submit to• a ritual immersion, a
group of American rabbis led by
Rabbi Yitz Greenfield has come
up with a solution, the Jewish
Schmooze has learned.
The Chief Rabbis in Israel are
insisting that that the Ethio-
pians immerse themselves in
the mikvah to be recognized as
full Jews; the Ethiopians find
this insulting and insist that
they are already full Jews.
"We believe in dialogue and
compromise" said Rabbi Yitz
Greenfield of the National
Jewish Resurfacing and Recycl-
ing Center, "and we therefore
strongly suggest that the Ethio-
pian Jews submit to ritual im-

mersion

But a spokesman for the Chief
Rabbinate immediately
criticized Greenfields' suggestion
as "all wet — a foolish notion,
from head to toe."
Undaunted, Greenfields said
his group has already arranged
a meeting to deal with the issue
of patrilineal descent in the U.S.
The meeting is reportedly be-
tween leaders of the Reform
Jewish moveent and Merrill
Lynch Inc. and will urge that a
child be recognized as Jewish if
either his mother, father or
stock broker is of the Jewish
faith.
