Dr. Leo Alexander,
Treated Survivors
Boston (JTA) — Dr. Leo Ale-
xander, 79, a psychiatrist and
neurologist who arranged treat-
ment for 40 concentration camp
victims crippled by injections of
gas by. Dr. Josef Mengele died
July 20 in Newton, Mass.
Dr. Alexander, a medical in-
vestigator for Secretary of War
Robert Patterson and an aide to
the chief counsel at the Nurem-
berg war crimes trials, wrote the
Nuremberg code, which estab-
lished moral, ethical, and legal
principles for experiments on
humans, after studying the ac-
tions of German SS troops and
concentration camp guards.
Dr. Alexander came to the
United States in 1933 after re-
ceiving his medical degree from
the University of Vienna and
serving an internship at the
University of Frankfurt, Ger-
many. He held positions at sev-
eral American hospitals before
becoming associate professor of
neuropsychiatry at Duke Uni-
versity's medical school in 1941.
David Zucker
New York (JTA) — David
Zucker, a long-time leader in the
Zionist and Conservative move-
ments, died July 28 at age 79.
Mr. Zucker was of immediate
past president of the World
Council of Synagogues. He was
long an active member of the
United Synagogue of America.
A founding member of the
Zionist Organization of America,
he was a member of the board of
overseers of the Jewish Theolog-
ical Seminary of America.
Thirteen years ago, Mr.
Zucker established a Center for
Conservative Judaism in Israel.
Posthumous Honors
For Author Charchat
Posthumous honors were paid
last week to the memory of Isaac
Charchat, author of A Constant
Reminder, a novel focusing on
early Zionist history.
Tributes to him came from the
publishers, Shengold Inc., and
many readers.
Mr. Charchat gained a wide
reputation in the shipping indus-
try.
His novel, A Constant Remin-
der, deals with early Jewish set-
tlement' in Palestine at the start
of the century.
The novel also relates exten-
sively to the commencement of
the Nazi era and exposes the
Henry Ford-Adolf Hitler friend-
ship that shocked public opinion
in this country.
Hilda Kiawitx
Hilda Krawitz, an early volun-
teer for the Sinai Hospital Guild,
died July 30 at age 86.
Born. in Duluth, Minn., Mrs.
Krawitz lived 84 years in De-
troit. She was a board member of
the guild for more than 20 years
and a current vice president. She
also was co-chairman of the
Sinai gift shop.
Mrs. Krawitz leaves a son, M.
Philip; and two grandsons.
