LOCAL NEWS Former Detroiters Zelda Bensman Hamburger and her husband Rabbi Yosssi Ham- burger of Jerusalem have re- ceived interest-free loans from the Associations of Parents of American Israelis through Americans and Canadians in Is- rael, organizations that give economic relief as well as sup- port to olim. The couple immig- rated to Israel seven years ago. The couples' third child, Menachem, eight months, has rhabdomyosarcoma, a form of cancer. The disease was spotted quickly and the prognosis is good. The medical bills, includ- ing recent surgery performed at Hadassah Hospital, were covered by Israel's national health insurance. But the couple is responsible for care outside the hospital. In order to keep the baby free of germs, taxis must be used to transport the child to the hospi- tal. Private nursing care is also required, as is a larger home to separate the older children from the sick infant. Because of the child's condi- tion, Mrs. Hamburger had to leave her job, leaving her hus- band, a teacher, bringing in an income of $400 a month. Due to the recent death of Mrs. Hamburger's mother, and her unplanned return to Michi- gan, the family is left in worse financial condition. The boy re- mains in Israel, where he re- ceives chemotherapy and drug treatments, which will continue for the next 1'W2-2 years. Despite these problems, the couple intends to remain in Is- rael. "I love Israel," Mrs. Ham- Bar-Ilan Dinner Slated Sept. 10 The annual dinner of the De- troit Friends for Bar-Han Uni- versity will be held Sept. 10 at Cong. Shaarey Zedek. Donald Fox and Paul Zlotoff, general chairmen, said the dinner will mark Bar-Ilan's 30th academic year. Guest speaker will be Senator Joseph R. Biden, Jr. (D-Del.), member of the Se- nate Foreign Relations Commit- tee and a strong supporter of the State of Israel. Yossi Harel, a Bar-Ilan alumnus doing ad- vanced graduate work at the University of Michigan, will ad- dress the dinner about the im- portance of the Hechtman Heroes Road, Bar-Ilan's barrier- free system for university stu- dents who have become perma- nently disabled as a result of war-related injuries. Harel is a former Bar-Han student and a former paratroop officer. The Hechtman Heroes Road is the most recent project at Bar- Ilan that has been sponiored by Detroiters. The Bar-Han - De- troit association began several years before the actual founding of the university, and has led to the creation of a great number of physical factilities, as well as academic projects at the school. For dinner information, call the Bar-Han office, 398-7180. burger says. "And I never plan on leaving it." Discrimination Suit Is Filed A $10,000 law suit has been filed against The Detroit Free Press by one of its employees. The suit claims that the em- ployee, Sam Berman, a printer, has been the victim of verbal and physical abuse because he is Jewish. Berman filed the suit in the attempt to seek an injunction prohibiting any further religious discrimination.
