LETTERS

As a former Detroiter who
moved to the "Sun Belt" over 40
years ago, and one who has been
very intensely involved in
Jewish education for over 20
years, I must take exception to
the comments made by Mark
Schlussel (July 19). For him to
state that the "Sun Belt states
and the Sun Belt lifestyle are
partly to blame for the demise in
Jewish education" tells me he is
totally unaware that Jewish
education is alive and well in the
South! He is also claiming that
Jewish education is in terrible
straits and this is not true.
Great strides have been made
in Jewish education and it has
been happening right here in the
United States. Our schools are
doing a much better job than
they did 20 years ago, when I
first became involved. There was
a time when we did not have
trained teachers, but this also is
no longer true. Our teachers are
not only trained, but they con-
tinue their professional growth
on a regular basis. Not only do
the individual schools provide
in-service training, but the
teachers grow professionally by
attending regional and national
conferences dedicated specifi-
cally to a teacher's professional
growth... •

On behalf of the Detroit Soviet
Jewry Committee of the Jewish
Community Council, we want to
express our appreciation to you
for the excellent coverage The
Jewish News has given to b'nai/
b'not mitzvah twinning with re-
fuseniks in recent months.
We are sure that the increas-
ing interest in twinning in our
community is due in no small
part to its being prominently
featured in The Jewish News.

ing and settling the land.
It's the leaders of Israel that
need to learn from this tragic
episode. No government should
ever again let our people become
subject to terrorist attacks with-
out giving them the protection
they need. We must all say to
the President of Israel: Pardon
them!

I am an ex-Detroiter who has
lived in Israel for the past two
years. I was recently taking a
bus from Jerusalem. to Tel Aviv
and began to converse with my
seatmate. Malka was a middle-
aged woman who became very
excited when she heard that I
was from •Detroit. It seems that
she is from Ramla, the city that
Detroit is twinned to in the Proj-
ect Renewal. Her family has
been directly affected by De-
troit's committment to Ramla,
and she felt that she had to
thank me, as a representative of
Detroit.
Malka told me that, after four
years on the waiting list, her
father had been able to get a
placement in the senior citizens
home in Ramla, a facility that is
heavily aided by Project Re-
newal. Also, her husband was
accepted into a job retraining
program after 14 months, and
has already been offered a job to
begin upon completion of his
course.
.I immigrated to Israel almost
two years ago, and often I feel
acutely the lack of family and
friends. However, during that
one bus ride with Malka, I felt
very close to, and much a part of
my native community.
