The responsibilities of the
coordinating organizations
are drawn along fairly sharp
lines, Alter said. "The UJA-
federation• team is respon-
sibile for recruiting the vol-
unteers and the Jewish
Agency has to make sure the
program is implemented suc-
cessfully once they• end up in
Israel."
Help on the recruitment
end will come from the var-
ious B'nai B'rith Hillel Foun-
dations. Hillel Foundations
at Wayne State University,
the University of Michigan
and Michigan State Univer-
sity have endorsed the project
and pledged their involve-
ment, according to Alter.
WSU Hillel Director Rabbi
Louis Finkelman called the
Service Corps a "wonderful
idea" and said the campus
organization would be "alert
for opportunities to sell the
project to potential volun-
teers and to get the publicity
out to WSU's Jewish stu-
dents."
"We aren't worried about
being able to recruit enough
volunteers," Alter said, add-
ing that he expects the pro-
gram will eventually send
more than 1,000 young adults
to Israel on an annual basis.
Another goal is to have as
many of the volunteers as
possible "adopted" by Israeli
families following their arri-
val in the Jewish state, ac-
cording to Alter. "The family
would ideally have a son or
daughter about the same age
as the participant. This
would help promote the close
ties a program like this is
capable of generating."
Those ties, Alter said, can
have "a million different re-
percussions. It may mean
that an American participant
wants to visit his family in
