Israel Museum
Exhibits Treasure

AL HARRISON LUGGAGE OUTLET

Unique
Jerusalem
archaeological treasures have
recently been placed on exhibition
by the Israel Museum in
Jerusalem. The collection of
9,000-year-old artifacts has
revolutionary anthropological
implications because it provides
the first opportunity for experts to
study the civilization of Neolithic
man (late Stone Age) from such a
diverse collection of artifacts.
"The sensational apect of these
objects," explains Dr. Tamar Noy,
curator of pre-history at the
museum, "is that they comprise
an almost complete picture of
what society must have been like
during that age. We have found
odd bits and pieces in the past but
nothing as revealng and as
sophisticated as this. Some of the
fabrics and designs are so
exquisite that they give us a new
view of what our ancestors were
like and they should banish
forever any popular notions that
Neolithic man was brutish and
dull."
This archaeological cache was
discovered in a cave in the Judean
Desert 30 miles south of
Jerusalem. The desert's caves
have been a favorite hunting
ground for archaeologists and
fortune seeking Bedouins, ever
since the Dead Sea Scrolls were
uncovered in a similar cave in the
1940s. In 1983, David Alon of the
Education Ministry's Department
of Antiquities and Museums and
Prof. Ofer Bar-Yosef of the
Hebrew University probed deeper
into the cave and unearthed their
maganificent find.
The cave is located in Nahal
Hemer (Hebrew for Asphalt
River) and over the centuries it
has been frequented for shelter by
hyenas and passing shepherds.
Evidence suggests that the cave
was also in use during the

Canaanite-Israelite period and
later during the time of the
Second Temple. Carbon 14 tests
proved beyond doubt that the
artifacts do indeed date from some
9,000 years ago and the collection
was kept under wraps for more
than a year to provide the Israel
Museum with a display of
appropriate 'importance to
celebrate its 20th anniversary.
Among the objects are fabrics
woven in eleven intricate designs
using diverse methods of knotting
and meshing, a human skull
decorated with aaphalt, and a
painted mask and some cloth
fragments, which are the oldest
examples found. A range of
ornaments and Jewelry include
