George W. Crockett (D-Detroit) reiterated his advo- cacy of open dialogue with the PLO. "I regret that you and possibly others of my Jewish friends dis- agree with my views concerning the Middle East situation," the Congressman said in a letter to Clara Raven. "I've visited the area four times. My conclusions are based not upon reading the views of others — though I've done quite a bit of that —but rather upon my own observations and conversations with both the leaders and the ordinary people in the area. "There can be no peace in the Middle East that does not recog- nize Israel's right to exist; a Pales- tinian homeland of the West Bank and Gaza; and self-determination for the Palestinian people. "My advocacy — with which you apparently disagree has been confined to the simple pro- position that talking (emphasis CrockeWs) with the responsible representatives of the Palestinian people is a necessary first step to a just and lasting peace in the region. . ."
