human beings as being infinitely
valuable, as an equal, as unique.
Sexuality is the expression of
that confirmation. In the Bible,
the word for intercourse is
yadoa, "to know." To know
someone totally, in all his/her
uniqueness, body as well as
mind, to treasure a person as in-
finitely valuable and give joy
and pleasure as an equal — this
is what intercourse is meant to
convey. To reach that level,
however, one needs relationship,
intimacy, opening up to the
other, and dependability. Com-
mitment in marriage, to be with
a partner even when he/she is
not so wonderful, even when he
or she is miserable, is part of the
affirmation of the other's value
and uniqueness. Marriage is
open to the creation of new life
and structured to nurture and
sustain it. This is why Judaism
insists that marriage is the
standard locus for authentic
sexuality.
By this Jewish standard, pro-
miscuity is se aarlsuedo'-exper-
ience. It is a for confirma-
tion of being an image of God.
However, in the absence of rela-
tionship, the act of intercourse
is incapable of giving value.
In Jewish terms, promiscuity
is a frenetic search for the ab-
sent confirmation of one's own
self-worth. However, since
promiscuity reflects the absence
of intimacy, casual sexuality can
give no such confirmation. On
the contrary, self-devaluation is
the outcome. Only when the
deepest bonds of dependability,
commitment, and relationship
have been achieved can there be
the experience of being an image
of God.
There is a utopian drive with-
in the sexual revolution as well.
Every possible sexual exper-
ience is sought out, in the search
for final fulfillment. Every pos-
sible partner is tried in the hope
of attaining the ultimate ex-
perience of sexual perfection.
But the human, says Judaism,
ultimately is a finite creature.
The insistence on grasping in-
finity, then, is bound to lead to
failure. Judaism accepts limita-
tions as a natural fact of our
humanness. As Rabbi Soloveit-
chik has pointed out, the tradi-
tional law of nidah — of
withdrawal from sexuality dur-
ing the month (at the onset of
menstruation) — is a statement
of acceptance of the inability to
achieve the perfect sexual state
that was sought. In structuring
in recognition of imperfection,
Judaism frees the human being
from obsessive search for pedec-
tion. It encourages people to
strive with and to live with the
normal limitations of human
relationship, Withdrawal re-
plenishes desire; it paves the
way for immersion in the mik-
veh, the classic rebirth ritual of

renewed search for union and
fulfillment. Such a rhythm is
truly human, because it wog-
nine limitations.
