Rabbi Offers Recollections "Eyewitness to history" is a proper description of a most im- pressive autobiography. It is being applied to A Rabbi's Rov- ings (Ktav) in which Rabbi Israel Mowshowitz recalls his half- century of experiences as an emis- sary for the Jewish people to many quarters of, the world and his spokesmanship for Jewry. He had many assignments. His travels were worldwide and in the course of them he met and confer- red with the world's leading Jewish personalities and many non-Jews as well. ' He received many honors, most noteworthy the Medallion of the City of New York, awarded to him by Mayor Robert F. Warner. In his many roles, as president of the New York Board, as Synagogue Council of America's delegate to the Non- Governmental Organizations of the United Nations and as a par- ticipant, in many American Jewish tasks, he was an emissary to many world Jewish com- munities. Therefore, he was close to the Israel scene and befriended such leaders as David Ben-Gurion and the various Israeli ambassadors. The non-Jews he met and con- ferred with included the Shah of Iran, King Hussein of Morocco, President Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana and President Sadat of Egypt, the martyred leader who made peace with Israel. In part, Wiesel stated: "What your friends like about ydu is your tolerance and under- standing: you are open to ideas and experiences. Differing opin- ions do not annoy you. In fact, come to think of it, I have never seen you angry. Nor have I found anger in your book.' Except . Except when describing here and there certain Jews who hide their Jewishness or are ashamed of it. And when visiting Germany, "Elsewhere, even in Arab coun- tries, you wish to listen, to learn, to acquire knowledge. It is the Jew in you, the Rabbi in you that aims to build bridges between our people and others, our faith and others, our tradition and others. To read you is to follow you on your journey to Iran's festivities and to Morocco's conferences, to Poland's cemeteries and to Prague's Museum, to Egypt and to South Africa, and, naturally, to Israel, to Jerusalem the dream of our dreams, the fire that keeps our sparks alive," Rabbi Mowshowitz's autobiog. raphy is impressive, informative and will surely be treated as an important supplement to the re' corded Jewish history of this on- 4ury, P,S, OPENING AUGUST 2!
