velopments, in an
article from
Cairo by Barbara Rosewicz, in the
July 16 Wall Street Journal. Her
article concludes with this sig-
nificant revelation of fears forced
upon Christians in Egypt, after
her report on the anti-Israel fun-
damentalist attitudes. She con-
cluded by stating:
... the movement inspires
fears. Outwardly, there are
many signs that fundamen-
talism. or ot load roligious re-
Daughters of Western-dressed
Moslem women have adopted

ing numbers. Participants of
the Islamic trend have won.
election to important profes-
sional boards.
Pressure forced Parlia-
ment this spring to vote on
whether to immediately adopt
sharia, which applies religious
rules to all sorts of human be-
havior and in its most extreme
provides punishments like
amputation of the hands for
thievery. The Parliament,
however, rejected immediate
adoption of Islamic law in
favor of a gradual "purifica-
tion" of Egypt's existing legal
code.
And before Mr. Mubarak's
new initiative, Christian
families privately began dis-
cussing where they would
move if Egypt became an Is-
lamic religious state like Iran
or the Sudan. One American
manager reported that a few
Coptic workers began asking
for transfers out of the coun-
try. Even Mr. Mubarak's own
response is a sign of apprehen-
sion, although Egyptian offi-
cials privately say that his
tough stance should be read as
an early warning to the fun-
damentalists rather than as a
sign he thinks fundamentalism
poses a serious threat to stabil-
ity.
Barbara Rosewicz described
the aftermath of Moslem holy day
services and stated:
Some of the 2,000 young
male worshipers linger to kiss
the band of Sheik Hafez
Salaama, a gray-bearded Mos-
lem preacher who wants to
march on the president's office
to press for the application of
Islamic law in Egypt. They
chant: "No to the West. No to
Zionism. No to the Crusaders."
One of. them, a young
bearded Moslem in „a white
robe, grips an observer's arm.
"Change through force. Don't
forget," he threatens in perfect
English.
problems are thrill & uentvi_his
the Rosewicz report:
Although this is an iso-
lated scene in a teeming city of
14 million, the Egyptian gov-
ernment is taking it and others
very seriously. Islamic fun-
damentalism is on the rise
here, and President Hosni
Mubarak has delivered a
series of recent warnings that
he won't stand for the fun-
damentalists stirring up trou-
ble in a nation that is 90 per-
cent Moslem.
Mubarak, on the spot under
threats from the extremists in his
country, apparently is standing
up the threatening forces, but the
menace is not decreasing. From
all indications it is rising, and the
reactions by Christians em-
phasize the danger, The menacing
situations understandably affect
Israel.
Mubarak has been silent on
many issues in recent weeks. He
seems especially to have been
striving not to•be involved in the
TWA hijacking and in the ter-
rorist threats, lie has his own
threateners to be concerned with.
Yet there is hope that he will con-
tinue to resist the most menacing
fundamentalists in the best inter-
ests of peaceful moods with other
faiths. The dangerous develop-
ments could affect the attitudes
and the
positions of most of the Moslem
nations. Therefore, the hope for
rationalism in that area embraces
all peoples everywhere. The hope
is that common sense will be the
rule and Mubarak among its chief
propagators.
