I NOW OPEN SUN.

George Ohrenstein
Jewelers, Ltd.

The alarmist conclusions
drawn from Prof. Dov Friedlan-
der's demographic study (so prom-
inently displayed and quoted in
the July 12 Jewish News)
"if
Israel were to annex the West
Bank and the Gaza Strip while
continuing to function as a demo-
cratic country, it would not be a
Jewish state within 30 years" — is
fully in line with the thinking and
agitating of the dovish and left
elements in Israel and in this
country who advocate the ceding
of Judea, Samaria and the Gaza
Strip to Jordan or constituting
them as a Palestinian Arab state.
Yohanan Ramati, a distin-
guished editor and foreign affairs
expert, in his recent article "De-
mography and Construction in Is-
rael" (Midstream, June/July,
1985) refutes and demolishes the
verbal and statistical arguments
. . .
Mr. Ramati quotes reliable
statistics (primarily from the
Central Bureau of Statistics and
the Research Department of the
Bank of Israel) which show that
the Jewish population in all the
areas west of the Jordan in the
years 1967-1982 has grown ap-
preciably more than the Arab and
non-Arab population. Also, that
the Arab population in Judea,
Samaria and the Gaza Strip has
been "increasing very much more
slowly than 'the Jewish popula-
tion of Israel" proper. Mr. Ramati
concludes that, based on the
statistics he quotes and the
analysis he provides, "it is
ridiculous to claim that these
Arabs will cause a demographic
upheaval in Palestine (that is, all
west of the Jordan River) during
the next two or three decades,"
and that from the demographic
aspect Judea, Samaria and Gaza
"simply do not constitute a prob-
lem for Israel."
That The Jewish News high-
lighted Prof. Friedlander's alar-
mist study — which I suspect to be
tendentious in its very nature and
purpose — without balancing it
out with current and credible op-
posing views and encouraging
conclusions, is regrettable and a
disservice to the great majority of
Israelis and to the Jews of the U.S.
who support them and are con-
cerned with their future in 2015
and beyond.
