Jewish Hospital and served his
residency at Sea-View Hospital in
New York before returning to
Detrit to open a private practice.
In 1937, Dr. Steinhardt married
native Detroiter Freda Freeden-
son. They have three children and
two grandchildren.
He was elected president of the
Maimonides Medical Society in
1958 and chosen to head the
Michigan Allergy Society in 1959,
contributing several articles to
medical journals on internal
medicine, allergies and
psychosomatic allergies. The
work on psychosomatic allergies
prompted Dr. Steinhardt to em-
bark on a three-year residency in
psychiatry, which he continues to
practice.
Dr. Steinhardt's steadfast
commitment to the survival of Is-
rael reached its zenith in the days
preceding the 1967 Six Day War.
In addition to raising funds pri-
vately, he volunteered to take the
place of a doctor needed for the
front. It was Dr. Steinhardt's sec-
ond military medical experience,
the first coming in World War II
when he served in the U.S. Army
Medical Corps. Previously, Dr.
Steinhardt had been a medical
officer for nine months in the U.S.
Reserves.
Following the 1967 war, Dr.
Steinhardt took up the study of
Hebrew in earnest and became
president of Moadon, the Hebrew
Cultural Club, for three years.
The doctor has been active in the
Jewish Community Council for
more than two decades and has
served on various Council com-
mittees, including the Executive
Committee and the Constitu-
tional Committee.
He has participated in numer-
ous volunteer activities, includ-
ing a stint at the Eitanim
Psychiatric Hospital in
Jerusalem in 1970.
In addition tb his scientific arti-
cles, Dr. Steinhardt has written
two articles of Judaic interest:
"Masks of Anti-Semitism," pub-
lished in the Sinai Hospital Bulle-
tin in 1974 and Michigan
Psychiatric News in 1976, and
"Theodore Herzl — Search for
Identity," which also appeared in
the Sinai Hospital Bulletin. He
has contributed numerous book
reviews to The Jewish News.
