Sell it for immediate cash. We pur- chase fine gems, Diamonds and Gold Jewelry. BY M.J. ROSENBERG Special to The Jewish News A SERVICE TO PRIVATE OWNERS, BANKS AND ESTATES. It's hard to believe but there is a syndicated columnist who actu- ally makes Evans & Novak look sympathetic to Israel. His name is Joseph Sobran and his bigoted bombast can be found in major newspapers in Denver, In- dianapolis, Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, Tulsa, and 67 other Ameri- can cities. Some of Sobran's comments are simply incredible. On Dec. 5, 1984, he wrote a column on The New Republic and its shift away from New Deal liberalism. Sobran quoted Sen. Gary Hart (Mole.) who - speaking at the maga- zine's anniversary party - said that The New Republic defies easy labels. Hart said: "The old labels don't work anymore," Sobran retorted; "They don't, eh? Try 'Jewish,' Senator. That label has been around for 4,000 years and it still works fine." It was during the Bitburg con- troversy that Sobran really went to town. Naturally, Sobran thought the President should lay the wreath at the cemetery. He implored Reagan; "Mr. President, you've made us proud. Don't let them make you ashamed." Sobran took after the Bitburg critics in another column two days later, He dismissed the opposition of veterans' groups to the Bitburg wreath-laying. "Why should I pretend that this uproar is being caused by the veterans?' What about 'the power of the Jews' the Bitburg mayor referred to." He then said that he loathes "minority group bullying," In the same column he stated his view of Nazi crimes; "bygones were bygones," One influential reader of Sob- ran's column had had enough, Hy Rosen, long-time political car- toonist for the Hearst-owned M- bony (New York) Times-Union, responded to Sobran with a car- toon which appeared on the paper's editorial page (the same page where Sobran's column ap- pear s), it showed Adolf Hitler and under him the option; "Not All My AM are Busier In the fore- ground there woman identiflod oboe Is 4 ng out what ,Rosen labeled as : ' 'ran'e "hit list" ...liberals, Jews, Women, Blacks, The Poor, Moderates, Cuomoahnic Slur, Logic, Com- passion," The cartoon was Arm stuff and it produced the predictable atom among Timss ,Union "adore - and *bran himself, She editor of therimegision by his cartoonist, in a AO his readers (some of gem outrsiged lib Idoosn'!4 MOW , editor Maysy eseafild ioisaitaritmp ANY mow est. 1 919 30400 Telegraph Road Suites 104,134 Birmingham, Mi. 48010 (313) 642.5575 00dt dge AWARDED CERTIFICATE BY GIA IN GRADING & EVALUATION.
