surer of the Jewish Welfare
Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit. "The weather is nice,
there are sports, dance lessons
. . . all these things get priority
over Jewish education."
In those communities where
the demographics are
younger, such as in the new
Jewish communities in 'the
Sun Belt, the percentage of
youngsters receiving Jewish
education is sharply reduced.
And nationally, 35 percent of
those getting a Jewish educa-
tion only receive one hour of
Jewish studies each week.
Forty-two percent attend af-
ternoon schools for two to six
hours per week. Twenty-three
percent attend day schools.
No matter what type of
Jewish school is attended,
Schlussel believes "it is im-
possible to expect any teacher
to impart a sense of Jewish
identity and its centrality in
these minimal settings, unless
there is a family commitment
to Jewish values which is car-
ried on in the home. If there is
no follow-through in the home,
the teacher's task is over-
whelming in my opinion."
Schlussel sees JESNA play-
ing a vital role because it is the
only national Jewish educa-
tion service that is "non-
denominational," providing
resources that can be adapted
by Orthodox, Conservative or
Reform Jewish schools. He
hopes JESNA will also serve
as one of the bridges between
the disparate Jewish denomi-
nations.
The significant lack of

available, qualified Jewish
teachers is a problem that will
not be solved in the short term,
says Schlussel. "Jewish teach-
ing has not been a position
that can earn a person an
adequate living." A solution to
this problem is to utilize the
ten or 20 best Jewish teachers
in the world on a wider basis
through the use of advanced
technology such as videocas-
settes.
"We have to be creative
about teaching methodology
and we have to prioritize our
subject matter, to intensify
those subjects that are more
likely to lead to Jewish survi-
val, such as Jewish history.
We have to allow a youngster
to understand the glory of his
Jewish past and to identify
with it."
Schlussel said he believes
the most important outcome of
the Jewish Agency sessions is
the emphasis placed on Jewish
education by world Jewish
leaders. The agency created an
education committee several
years ago, chaired by Morton
Mandell of Clevela'nd, and
Schlussel is "hopeful that we
will begin to see some real,
positive changes as a result of
this recognition."
One policy decision made by
the Jewish Agency Assembly
is that Hebrew should be the
spoken language of Jews
throughout the world. Schlus-
sel hopes to see the creation of
a 24-36 month ulpan for
Jewish adults and children
which can teach Jews
worldwide to speak Hebrew.

Fighting Drug Abuse

Rehovot — A Weizmann
Institute-developed formula that
helps fluidize membranes may
provide a major new weapon in
the fight against drug and alco-
hol addiction. Taken as a dietery
supplement, it may also help to
control certain problems of old
age and, as an aerosol inhalation
spray, to ease the breathing of
cystic fibrosis victims. A wide
range of laboratory studies using
this preparation is now in pro-
gress at major medical centers in
the U.S. and Israel, and clinical
trials are being planned.
Preliminary trials with human
patients have been carried out in
Israel regarding immune dys-
function in elderly subjects, and
in France investigating respira-
tory ability in children suffering
from cystic fibrosis. Approval to
begin clinical trials has been
granted recently by the United
States Food and Drug Adminis-
tration. It is anticipated that
human trials will begin in the
U.S. within the next three to six
months.

chers headed by Profs. Meir
Shinitzky (Dept. -of Membrane
Research) and David Samuel

`Crime' Rises

Jerusalem (JTA) — Computer
crime, which has become the bane
of advanced technology all over
the world, has risen to significant
proportions in Israel. But much of
it goes unreported by the victims
for fear of bad publicity, deputy
Attorney General Yoram Bar-
Sela told an international sym-
posium on computers and the law
at the Hebrew University.
He said the Justice Ministry is
drafting recommendations for
special legislation to deal with
this type victims who fail to report
their suspicion of such crimes.
The proposed legislation would
make it illegal to interfere with
the proper functioning of com-
puters to alter computer data or
steal computer programs.
