SLA Defections
Worry Israelis
Tel'Aviv (JTA) — The Israel
Defense Force (IDF) is refusing to
comment on what appears to be
serious defections from its allied
South Lebanon Army (SLA), Is-
rael's chosen instrument to main-
tain order and prevent terrorist
infiltration of the narrow security
belt in south Lebanon, just north
of the Israeli border. the IDF is
also mum on reports that it has
been engaged in joint operations
with the SLA.
Officially, the last Israeli
soldiers departed Lebanese soil in
the first week of June.
Fears have been expressed
however, that increasing num-
bers of SLA soldiers are defecting
to the Shiite Moslem militia,
Amal, a bitter foe of the SLA and
generally hostile to Israel. The
deserters are presumed to be
Shiites who are a minority in the
mainly Christian Phalangist SLA
commanded by Gen. Antoine
Lehad.
In other news from south Leba-
non, an IDF soldier was slightly
wounded July 3 when fire was
opened on an Israeli position near
the village of Kantara, eight
kilometers west of the Israeli bor-
der. He was "scratched and
treated on the spot," according to
military sources.
Meanwhile, an SLA soldier was
wounded last week in the security
zone when his patrol came under
terrorist attack near Rehan vil-
lage. A terrorist was killed in the
exchange of fire, and a grenade
launcher was found later near his
body.

Jerusalem (JTA) — Richard
Murphy, the U.S. Assistant Sec-
retary of State for Near Eastern
and South Asian Affairs, will not
be coming to the Middle East in
the next few months — as origi-
nally planned — because he has
not received a list of members of
the joint Jordanian-Palestinian
delegation that is supposed to
enter the peace process with Is-
rael, sources here said Sunday.
The delay in presenting the
names to Murphy, was attributed
to disagreement between Jordan
and the Palestine Liberation
Organization, the sources said. In
the American view, the Jorda-
nians are inclined to meet Israel's
demand that no member of the
